The Bigger Picture
US 18 is the northernmost east-west U.S. highway in Iowa, running about 312 miles from the South Dakota border to the state’s eastern edge. Along the way it passes through more than two dozen towns, including Rock Valley, Sheldon, Spencer, Emmetsburg, Algona, Garner, Clear Lake, Mason City, and Charles City, connecting a wide stretch of northern Iowa in one continuous route. It enters the state by crossing the Big Sioux River between Inwood and Canton, South Dakota, on the far western edge, a long way from Algona but part of the same continuous highway.
Through Algona
Highway 18 intersects US-169 right in Algona, and that intersection area is also where you’ll find Hy-Vee and Dollar General, both sitting near that stretch of the highway. That makes the Highway 18 and 169 intersection one of the busiest commercial areas in town, and a useful landmark if you’re giving someone directions to almost anywhere on that side of Algona.
Just off Highway 18 in town, the Camp Algona POW Museum tells the story of the World War II POW camp that once operated here, a worthwhile stop if you’re curious about local history and driving through anyway. The museum sits close enough to the highway that it’s an easy detour rather than a special trip, which is part of why it draws visitors who might otherwise just pass through Algona without stopping.
History
Before it became a numbered U.S. highway, the road that’s now Highway 18 was known as Primary Road No. 19 and the National Parks Pike. It’s been designated as US 18 since November 11, 1926, making it nearly a century old as a named highway, even though the road itself predates that designation by however many years it took to originally connect these towns by wagon and early automobile routes.
Further east near Mason City, US 18 runs briefly alongside I-35 before continuing on as its own freeway bypassing the city to the south, a more modern upgrade compared to the two-lane stretch that runs through smaller towns like Algona further west.
