Kossuth County Fairgrounds: Events, Schedule, and What Happens There Year-Round

The Kossuth County Fairgrounds on East Fair Street are best known for hosting the county fair every August, but the grounds stay busy well beyond fair week. Between the fair itself, a motorsports museum, and buildings available for rent most of the year, it’s one of the more active pieces of property in town, not a place that only matters for one week a summer.

The Fair

The Kossuth County 4-H and FFA Fair runs for about a week every August, open to youth enrolled in 4-H and FFA whose club, chapter, or school is based in the county, or who live there. It’s a full week of livestock shows including beef and swine, youth arts and crafts, talent shows, a midway, and live entertainment, alongside plenty of fair food and local vendors. It’s the kind of event where showing livestock and watching the demolition derby happen in the same afternoon, a genuinely community-wide week rather than just a kids’ project showcase.

For families with kids in 4-H or FFA, the fair is often the culmination of a full year of project work, from raising an animal to building a craft project meant specifically for competition. Even if you don’t have kids showing anything, it’s worth going just to see how much the whole county turns out for it, since it’s one of the bigger shared events on the Kossuth County calendar each year.

Museum & Racing

The Kossuth County Ag & Motorsports Museum sits right on the fairgrounds and is worth a stop even outside of fair week. It now also houses the relocated Iowa Hall of Fame and Racing Museum, along with a collection of scale model trains, a nod to the area’s farming and racing history in one building. It’s a small museum by big-city standards, but it packs in a genuinely deep look at how agriculture and motorsports have shaped this part of Iowa.

The grounds also include a speedway that hosts racing events during the fair, drawing in a crowd that overlaps with, but isn’t limited to, the same families showing livestock earlier in the day. Racing at the Kossuth County Fair has been a draw in its own right for years, separate from the agricultural side of the event.

Year-Round Use

Several buildings on the fairgrounds are available to rent from September through July, which keeps the grounds in use well outside of fair season. That includes storage space across multiple buildings, making the fairgrounds a practical resource for the community beyond just the one week a year everyone thinks of first. Nativity Scene

The Algona Nativity Scene, a set of cement figures built by German POWs held at the nearby Camp Algona during World War II, is housed in a dedicated building on the fairgrounds. It’s open to the public throughout December and by special appointment at other times, a quieter, more reflective use of the same grounds that host the fair’s noise and lights every August.
